Wine Harvest 2021 – stress-free

2021 was a year in wine when nature simply let things “take their course”. And the course things took was a good one. Very good actually. No nights of late frost in April, foliation and blossom at the customary time. Heat and dryness, though also ample rain promoted healthy growth.

The harvest began at the beginning of September and was so stress-free, we were able to carefully monitor every little detail. Due to the unusual chill in September, the grapes came into our cellars cold, the acidity remained stable and the fruitiness of the berries developed wonderfully.

Press Voices

Stephan Reinhard,
Robert Parker Wine Advocate 2019
“The 2017 Ried Buch Weissburgunder is produced from a clay basalt and reveals a clear, fresh and elegant, perfectly matured and flintily spicy basalt bouquet. Velvety, linear, fresh and very elegant on the palate; this is a compact, excitingly lean, moderately vigorous Pinot with clear and refreshing fruit notes, though the music here comes exclusively from its soul (the ground).”

Sauvignon Blanc Privat 2013: “Tasted out of a large glass (...), this is a powerful, highly complex, robust and salty, very lean and concentrated Sauvignon, that belongs to the high points of Styrian history. It is so salty, pure and exciting. A magnificent wine.”

2017 Straden Morillon Trockenbeerenauslese: (...) “Tremendously rich and sophisticatedly elegant on the palate, this is a viscose, refined, extremely subtle and stimulatingly salty TBA, with an aftertaste that is balanced, fresh and stimulatingly clean. This is a spectacularly hedonistic TBA (...) a world-class sweet wine from Styria.”

Genuss Wein Pur Guide 2019/20
“The quality expectation is immediately apparent from the decision to source their local wines from single vineyards. The wines are characterized above all by abundant spiciness and constant complexity, all too well reflective of the local volcanic soil.” (...) “Ultimately, an astonishing palette of sweet wines not to be missed.”

Livets Goda, the leading wine magazine in Scandinavia, August 2019
”Walter Frauwallner has made a name for himself not least through his sweet wines and is undoubtedly one of the sharpest producers in the province when it comes to Eiswein and TBA.”

Obegg Best of Südsteiermark 2/2019
”Phoenix from the Vulkanland. In recent years, through their own hands-on work, quality-dedicated vine maintenance and grape selection at harvest, Walter and his wife Petra have developed a first-class image. Their credo: distinctive wines with a clear provenance and a joy to drink.”

Kleine Zeitung, Juni 2019
“Nothing new at the top: For the third time overall and the second time in succession, Walter and Petra Frauwallner from Straden came out as overall winners in the Provincial Wine Tasting and thereby acquired the coveted title of “Wine Estate of the Year”, also achieving a double success thanks to their Zweigelt and “Red-Wine Variety”.

Krone, Juni 2019
“1906 quality wines from around 500 winegrowers! The number of submissions once again gave the judges of the Provincial Wine Competition a lot of work. The (great) quality awaiting them in the 2017 bottles certainly made this work bearable. And let’s be honest, a true delight! The big winners, as in the previous year, were Petra and Walter Frauwallner from Straden.”
